Pride month serves as a time to commemorate the great strides that have been made towards equality for the LGBTQ+ community — and to ponder on the multitude of unfinished business still in work for equal rights. With Trans rights being under attack from left to right, it is paramount that we continue to fight alongside our queer and trans peers to address the discriminatory legislations targeting their quality of life. According to the ACLU, 1 in 5 Trans people are refused medically necessary care; 78% of Trans people experience harassment in K-12 settings; and 31 states lack explicit legal protections for Trans people. This is an issue because everyone deserves to be affirmed in their identity.
What Is QTPOC?
QTPOC stands for Queer and Trans People of Color. QTPOC are usually marginalized from the LGBTQ+ movement despite their historical significance in the LGBTQ+ Civil Rights movement. QTPOC – especially youth – are more likely to suffer from a mental health condition such as depression or anxiety. In honor of Pride month, we have compiled a list of community resources for our QTPOC community and allies.
